Malcolm Brookes received his artistic training at Moseley School of Art and later at Birmingham College of Art and Crafts from which he graduated in 1964. In 1963 whilst still a student in the School of Painting he received the ‘David Murray Award’ for landscape painting, the first of several awards over the following decades. In 1964 he began his art teaching career and headed a total of three art departments until retirement in 1997 since when he has continued to tutor adult leisure painting groups. He has exhibited at the RBSA since 1963 becoming a full member in the mid 1970s and is also a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy. His paintings, varied in their subject matter, start with observation but frequently develop towards abstraction. Main media are oils, gouache and pastels.
