John Scott Martin

John Scott Martin, NDD. PPRSMA. PRSMA. FRSA was born in Nottinghamshire, and studied graphic design and printmaking at the Nottingham College of Art in the 1960s.

He now lives in rural Worcestershire, about as far from the sea as you can get. In his marine paintings and linocuts, he likes his boats to be seen to move. This effects how he gathers his reference material, his primary source of visual imagery being an extensive library of his own photographs. His collection is added to whenever possible – often at sea with no time for a sketch, but always time for the camera to record.

During his time at art college, he developed an interest in mining imagery, living within easy sketching distance of the locally active coalfields. This interest was extended by visits to the tin mining landscapes of Cornwall. Over the last few years he has had successful mining themed solo exhibitions in Cornwall and in the North of England.

John has always been inspired by the sea, sailing and ships. He is now principally a marine painter and printmaker. In 2020 he was elected President of the Royal Society of Marine Artists.
