SUMMARY:RBSA Summer Show 2026
DESCRIPTION:The RBSA Summer Show is the Society’s biggest open call of the year and attracts submissions from artists based all around the globe. Displayed over all three floors of the Gallery\, this exhibition does not limit artists to a theme or technique\, the result being a highly diverse show with a multitude of approaches represented. \nAs Birmingham’s equivalent to the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition\, this show provides an excellent opportunity for artists to showcase their work in the city’s foremost contemporary art gallery. SUMMARY:Seven Winds CIC - Pathfinders: Sunday Best
DESCRIPTION:Pathfinders: Sunday Best explores local histories\, public engagement\, and portraiture\, as modes of making and meaning. \nMore than style\, the Sunday best as a cultural phenomenon embodies memory\, and the enduring power of being seen. This exhibition draws on what began as a church ritual and evolved into a cultural language – vibrant colours\, tailored suits\, and headwear reveal how style and self‑presentation shape identity. \nPathfinders: Sunday Best invites visitors to explore how Caribbean communities use dress\, colour\, and self‑presentation to express pride and belonging. Through portraits\, artefacts\, personal stories\, and participatory programming\, visitors are given insights into Sunday Best as a cultural language. SUMMARY:Largely Unseen: Works From The RBSA Permanent Collection
DESCRIPTION:The objective of RBSA heritage exhibitions is to give the public access to the Society’s Permanent Collection of artworks. Themes for these shows are chosen to facilitate the display of a broad selection of pieces\, aimed at giving visitors the opportunity to view as wide as possible a cross section of the works held. \nWith wall space at a premium\, limited space often means that RBSA heritage exhibitions cannot feature many of the larger works owned by the Society. Largely Unseen will rectify these omissions by focusing solely on the most substantial artworks held in the Permanent Collection. \nBoth of Norma Rhys-Davis’ monumental oil paintings\, 3 Cliffs – Gower III and Seascape\, will be shown side by side for the first time\, and John Ridout’s sunny gouache piece Little Greek Church will sit next to his bold acrylic Blue And Ochre Landscape. \nPreview Evening: Tuesday 4 August 6.00pm – 8.00pm\nExhibition closes: Saturday 29 August 5.00pm \nImage: Norma Rhys-Davis RBSA\, 3 Cliffs – Gower III\, 1988

SUMMARY:Jan Gay RBSA
DESCRIPTION:Rhythmic brush strokes\, vibrant tones\, and a richness of light are central to Jan Gay’s collection. What could be every day\, becomes inspirational as she explores the energy of shape\, colour\, and form. Excitement builds from the seemingly insignificant. \nWhether painting plein air or in her studio\, the initial thrill of starting the work creates vitality in her mark making\, before a period of reflection. Evoking the way transient moments\, a motherly embrace in a queue or light on the canal water\, become a tangible memory. \nJan’s lifelong love of painting has been influenced by many artists\, including Paul Cezanne\, Mary Cassatt and\, more recently\, Fred Cuming. \nIn 2008 Jan became an RBSA Member. SUMMARY:RBSA Postcard Sale
DESCRIPTION:As a charity\, the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists relies on the generosity of its visitors and supporters to help maintain the RBSA Gallery and continue its vital work. With no public funding from either the local authority or Arts Council\, this 200 year-old Society supports itself through annual membership fees\, artwork sales\, exhibition entry fees\, Gallery Shop sales\, donations from local grant giving bodies\, and donations from the public. \nIn order to generate funds\, the Society is offering the public a unique opportunity to purchase original artwork at great prices in a blind auction. The postcards on display have all been created by RBSA Members and Associates and are currently in an auction on the Givergy website. \nVisitors are invited to used the link below to visit the online auction site and bid on the piece/s they would like to take home. SUMMARY:Gabrielle Roberts-Dalton RBSA
DESCRIPTION:Recasting the Shadow  \n…female intuition & the Ancestral Knower \nWorking through ideas related to the female psyche\, Gabrielle Roberts-Dalton has explored menopause\, ageing\, persona\, Hagitude/Cronedom female stories\, and fairytales. In these works\, she reassesses the importance of physically touching nature\, down to the basic touch of grass and finding awe and enchantment in the life/death/life nature. Her paintings try to open a portal into another world of intuition and the imagination. Roberts-Dalton works in series of oil paintings and drawings that overlap and could easily branch out in numerous directions. She follows an instinctual and fluid path\, responding to the images\, mark making\, and colour. DESCRIPTION:Summer Botanicals in Watercolour with Jeni Neale. \nSpend a summer’s day exploring how to paint those rich\, velvety petals that make seasonal blooms so irresistible. With guidance from botanical artist Jeni Neale\, you’ll learn textural watercolour techniques\, gentle layering\, and colour mixing to capture the softness and depth of midsummer flowers. By the end of the day\, you’ll have a beautifully detailed study to take home. \nFresh summer flowers will be provided\, plus a piece of hot-pressed watercolour paper. Bring your art supplies. \nAge group and abilities to be taught         \n\n18 years and above\nIdeal for beginners and experienced artists\n\nCourse aims and skills/knowledge to be taught \n\nWatercolour techniques involved in botanical art\nColour theory and mixing\n\nWhat you need to bring with you:\n\nWatercolour paints (a basic\, artist’s quality palette)\nBrushes including a number 4 and 6 watercolour brush\nPencil and eraser for initial sketches\nPalette\, preferably a ceramic plate\, and water container\n\nWhat we will provide:\n\nWatercolour paper\, a sheet of high quality cotton paper\nFlowers to paint from\n\nMethods of assessing outcomes\n\nFeedback from tutor\n\nBooking information\n\nTo book please use the ticketing system below. The space will be closed to visitors and will only be used by workshop attendees. However\, staff and volunteers will need to walk through the space at various points in the day to access the staff office\, which is located on the same floor.\nAttendees can leave their materials in the workshop space during their breaks but the RBSA will not be responsible for any loss or damages.\nPlease bring a packed lunch. Alternatively\, there are a number of cafés and sandwich shops within walking distance of the Gallery.\nPlease bring an old shirt or apron to help protect your clothing.\nThe continuous redevelopment work in the city centre has caused increased traffic\, delays\, and diversions in and around the City Centre.
