SUMMARY:RBSA Summer Show 2026
DESCRIPTION:The RBSA Summer Show is the Society’s biggest open call of the year and attracts submissions from artists based all around the globe. Displayed over all three floors of the Gallery\, this exhibition does not limit artists to a theme or technique\, the result being a highly diverse show with a multitude of approaches represented. \nAs Birmingham’s equivalent to the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition\, this show provides an excellent opportunity for artists to showcase their work in the city’s foremost contemporary art gallery. DESCRIPTION:Join RBSA Associate and co-owner of Ironbridge Fine Arts\, Jenny Mason-Gunning\, for a tour of the RBSA Summer Show 2026 with a focus on the various printworks on display. \nJenny will discuss the different printmaking techniques used to create each work as well as the technical processes involved and details on how the plates are made. This exhibition draws on what began as a church ritual and evolved into a cultural language – vibrant colours\, tailored suits\, and headwear reveal how style and self‑presentation shape identity. \nPathfinders: Sunday Best invites visitors to explore how Caribbean communities use dress\, colour\, and self‑presentation to express pride and belonging. Through portraits\, artefacts\, personal stories\, and participatory programming\, visitors are given insights into Sunday Best as a cultural language. SUMMARY:Largely Unseen: Works From The RBSA Permanent Collection
DESCRIPTION:The objective of RBSA heritage exhibitions is to give the public access to the Society’s Permanent Collection of artworks. Themes for these shows are chosen to facilitate the display of a broad selection of pieces\, aimed at giving visitors the opportunity to view as wide as possible a cross section of the works held. \nWith wall space at a premium\, limited space often means that RBSA heritage exhibitions cannot feature many of the larger works owned by the Society. SUMMARY:Jan Gay RBSA
DESCRIPTION:Rhythmic brush strokes\, vibrant tones\, and a richness of light are central to Jan Gay’s collection. What could be every day\, becomes inspirational as she explores the energy of shape\, colour\, and form. Excitement builds from the seemingly insignificant. \nWhether painting plein air or in her studio\, the initial thrill of starting the work creates vitality in her mark making\, before a period of reflection. Evoking the way transient moments\, a motherly embrace in a queue or light on the canal water\, become a tangible memory. \nJan’s lifelong love of painting has been influenced by many artists\, including Paul Cezanne\, Mary Cassatt and\, more recently\, Fred Cuming. \nIn 2008 Jan became an RBSA Member. SUMMARY:RBSA Postcard Sale
DESCRIPTION:As a charity\, the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists relies on the generosity of its visitors and supporters to help maintain the RBSA Gallery and continue its vital work. With no public funding from either the local authority or Arts Council\, this 200 year-old Society supports itself through annual membership fees\, artwork sales\, exhibition entry fees\, Gallery Shop sales\, donations from local grant giving bodies\, and donations from the public. \nIn order to generate funds\, the Society is offering the public a unique opportunity to purchase original artwork at great prices in a blind auction. DESCRIPTION:Recasting the Shadow  \n…female intuition & the Ancestral Knower \nWorking through ideas related to the female psyche\, Gabrielle Roberts-Dalton has explored menopause\, ageing\, persona\, Hagitude/Cronedom female stories\, and fairytales. In these works\, she reassesses the importance of physically touching nature\, down to the basic touch of grass and finding awe and enchantment in the life/death/life nature. Her paintings try to open a portal into another world of intuition and the imagination. Roberts-Dalton works in series of oil paintings and drawings that overlap and could easily branch out in numerous directions. She follows an instinctual and fluid path\, responding to the images\, mark making\, and colour. DESCRIPTION:Summer Botanicals in Watercolour with Jeni Neale. \nSpend a summer’s day exploring how to paint those rich\, velvety petals that make seasonal blooms so irresistible. With guidance from botanical artist Jeni Neale\, you’ll learn textural watercolour techniques\, gentle layering\, and colour mixing to capture the softness and depth of midsummer flowers. By the end of the day\, you’ll have a beautifully detailed study to take home. \nFresh summer flowers will be provided\, plus a piece of hot-pressed watercolour paper. SUMMARY:Next Generation RBSA 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Next Generation RBSA programme is triennial opportunity open to early-career visual artists based within easy reach of the RBSA Gallery in Birmingham. Through the programme\, the Society is offering a small number of artists the opportunity to enjoy the benefits a three-year free membership of the Society. \nIn contrast to the Society’s previous Graduate Artists programme\, this new scheme reflects the multitude of ways in which people begin their artistic journeys\, and the Society actively encouraged self-taught artists to apply for the programme\, alongside those who have completed arts-related courses at university. \nThe Next Generation RBSA Exhibition comprises work by applicants who\, following interviews\, were selected to show a collection of their artwork. From this group\, those chosen by the RBSA Council will be offered full Membership benefits\, including multiple exhibition opportunities at the RBSA Gallery each year\, a solo show space\, expert guidance and tutoring\, inclusion in Society activities\, and valuable invitations to networking events. SUMMARY:Guild of Aviation Artists - Defence Of The Realm
DESCRIPTION:The Guild of Aviation Artists was established in 1971\, and it is recognised throughout the world as the premier society for the promotion of aviation art. Its principal aim is to promote aviation art in all its forms\, and to encourage interest in the genre by artists and non-artists alike. \nAmongst the founder members of the Guild was the famous wildlife artist\, David Shepherd\, who was in fact an aviation artist before he became famous for his wildlife work. Other famous past members include the late artists Terence Cuneo\, Keith Shackleton\, Roy Cross\, and Roy Huxley (the latter two being most renowned for their Airfix and Matchbox cover art). \nThe Guild’s current membership stands at around 260 in the UK\, and the work of members\, both past and present\, is to be found in not only private collections around the world\, but in many corporate and governmental locations. In particular\, the majority of paintings to be found in the likes of the RAF Club and messes of airbases were most probably produced by Guild members. \nToday\, amongst the membership of the Guild\, are to be found ex-service personnel who have rekindled their association with military aviation through their artwork. \nThis new exhibition\, Defence Of The Realm\, will feature some 180 aviation paintings\, the majority of which will follow\, and portray\, the defence of the realm theme. \nThe opening day of the exhibition\, 15 September\, will be Battle of Britain day itself. A VIP opening ceremony (by Invitation only) will be held at the RBSA Gallery Monday 14 September\, when President of the Royal Air Forces Association\, Air Marshal Sir Baz North\, will be attending as guest VIP to open the show. \nThe Guild has agreed to donate part of the commission on any sales at the exhibition to the Royal Air Forces Association in recognition of those that have served –  and those who continue to do so. \nExhibition closes: Saturday 26 September 5.00pm \nImage: Robert Calow GAvA\, Defence Of The Realm (detail)

DESCRIPTION:Stories is the theme for the next Birmingham Art Circle Annual Exhibition. The exhibition will showcase artworks by established practising artists\, working in a wide range of media: including printmaking\, painting\, drawing\, sculpture\, ceramics\, mixed media\, photography\, and textiles. Come and see the tales that Birmingham Arts Circle artists want to tell. \nThe exhibition brings the Birmingham Art Circle back to the RBSA Gallery and St Paul’s Square once again\, where the group have been pleased to hold their Annual Exhibition for many years. \nFounded in 1879\, Birmingham Art Circle was formed to encourage professional development amongst its artists\, and to provide a forum to discuss and challenge new ideas\, with an emphasis on the combination of creativity and professional\, friendly connection. \nThe elected Members continue to work in a wide range of art forms and share these at monthly meetings to invite feedback and review with peers. \nVisit the Birmingham Art Circle website.

SUMMARY:RBSA Annual Exhibition 2026
DESCRIPTION:With the Society’s Annual Exhibition approaching its bicentenary\, 2026’s show offers the Membership\, including fourteen newly elected Associates\, the opportunity to show their work in the RBSA Gallery. Each new artist brings their unique artistic practice to the Society\, helping to further diversify the growing Membership. \nWith the exceptions of 1940\, 1941\, and 2020\, the RBSA’s flagship show\, its Annual Exhibition\, has featured the work of Society Members and Associates every year since its first incarnation in 1827. The Membership are encouraged to show their most recent work\, allowing visitors to see an update on their practice each winter. This exhibition also allows the Society to track it own evolution\, and with every new addition to the Membership comes further assurances of the RBSA’s survival for generations to come. \nWhile the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists has a long and illustrious history\, this year’s Annual Exhibition is a celebration of the almost 200 contemporary artists who make up the current Membership. With practices encompassing painting\, drawing\, printmaking\, photography\, sculpture\, glassware\, ceramics\, textiles\, videography\, and installation\, these artists act as custodians of the Society\, and work to promote the visual arts across the region and further afield. \nAt various times throughout the exhibition\, RBSA Members and Associates will be in the Gallery to talk to visitors and answer questions. \nPreview Evening: Thursday 19 November 6.00pm – 8.00pm\nExhibition closes: Saturday 2 January 2027 5.00pm \nImage: Linda Barlow RBSA\, Morro Jable to the Airport July \n
