SUMMARY:Drawn To Dance: The Figure In Motion
DESCRIPTION:This unique exhibition celebrates an exciting collaboration between the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and the Birmingham Royal Ballet. \nExploring the movement and poise of the ballet dancer\, alongside the colour and vibrancy of the stage setting\, the show aims to give visitors an insight into the artists’ process\, as well as the backstage world of the ballet. \nThe RBSA Membership was invited to study the dancers as they worked\, observing a series of rehearsals. Members working in all disciplines\, both 2D and 3D\, attended the sessions\, creating collections of preparatory sketches and photographs to take back to the studio. These sketches and photographs will be on display in the Gallery alongside the developed artworks which they informed. \nAs well as works from RBSA Members\, Associates\, and Graduate Artists\, guest artworks from renowned stage designer\, John Macfarlane\, backstage photographs taken by RBSA Associate and BRB Principal Dancer\, Lachlan Monaghan\, and artworks by Birmingham Royal Ballet dancers will be on show. SUMMARY:RBSA Print Prize 2026
DESCRIPTION:The RBSA Print Prize is part of the Society’s programme of prize exhibitions which give artists\, whose practices are rooted in a variety of different media and techniques\, regular opportunities to exhibit their work in the Gallery. \nWith a significant number of print works held in the RBSA Permanent Collection\, print-making forms an important part of the RBSA’s history\, and there are many printmakers within its Membership. \nLast held in 2024\, the RBSA Print Prize celebrates the diversity of printmaking whilst also introducing the public to the myriad of different printing techniques used today\, including screenprinting\, linocut\, monoprint\, etching\, woodcut\, lithography\, and dry point. SUMMARY:Colour: Shades\, Tints\, And Hues\, Artworks From The RBSA Permanent Collection
DESCRIPTION:The first heritage exhibition of 2026\, Colour: Shades\, Tints\, And Hues\, Artworks From The RBSA Permanent Collection\, is an exploration of works held in the RBSA Permanent Collection\, each chosen because they feature one dominant colour. With the artworks arranged on a colour wheel\, visitors will be able to experience the feelings and emotions evoked by each piece\, providing an insight into why artists choose to work with certain colours. \nWhen humans created the first artworks\, cave paintings dating back as far as 45\,000 years\, colour would have simply been the result of the materials available. As time went on\, palettes gained more colour and artists began employing different hues for reasons beyond simple necessity. For example\, during the middle ages\, Renaissance\, and early modern period\, ultramarine blue\, made using semi-precious lapis lazuli\, was used to demonstrate wealth and status\, as the pigment was often more expensive than gold. \nIn the Victorian era\, a ‘colour revolution’\, driven by discoveries of new minerals and advancements in techniques\, meant that the number of colours available to artists grew enormously\, and today there are hundreds of different pigments on the market. This ever growing selection has allowed the modern artist the freedom to use colour for a variety of different reasons\, including the representation of specific emotions and moods\, or to convey thoughts and ideas\, free from the restrictions of cost or limited options. \nThe artworks selected for this exhibition date back throughout the Society’s history and demonstrate the huge growth in the number of pigments made just in the RBSA’s lifetime. Visitors can see the vast differences in how artists have used colour throughout that time\, from early realistic studies to more modern works employing colour in a highly expressive way. \nThis exhibition affords visitors the opportunity to see pieces from a new perspective\, juxtaposed with works they may not otherwise sit next to\, shining new light on these precious artworks and the collection as a whole. \nPreview Evening: Thursday 26 February 6.00pm – 8.00pm\nExhibition closes: Saturday 28 March 5.00pm \nFeatured image: Glyn Griffiths\, Colour Of Summer\, 1963 (detail)

SUMMARY:Ed Isaacs PRBSA
DESCRIPTION:Following a career in social housing and urban regeneration\, Ed Isaacs decided to convert his lifelong love of sketching into a more developed artistic practice. \nThis exhibition is a survey of his work\, most of which was created since 2023. He takes his inspiration from a broad range of sources and has a particular fondness for the art of Chardin\, the Dutch masters\, and the English Romantics. \nEd’s studio work focuses on highly representational drawing. He takes an image that attracts him\, and through meticulous examination and mark making\, reproduces it\, often on a large scale. The time taken and deep observation is a vital part of his artistic process and invites the viewer to similarly slow down and look into the image. SUMMARY:Sigma - Prime Examples
DESCRIPTION:Working at a single focal length challenges the photographer to consider the relationship between foreground and background\, and encourages a deeper awareness of how distance\, framing and movement shape visual meaning. \nIn this exhibition\, six photographers from a range of genres were invited to produce five images at their chosen focal length\, using a fast-aperture prime lens from the Sigma Art range\, spanning focal lengths from 14mm up to 135mm. \nThe result is six distinct bodies of work that reveal not only the character of each lens\, but the personal way each photographer has chosen to see through it. \nExhibition closes: Saturday 11 April 5.00pm \nFeatured image: Tony Nöel

SUMMARY:RBSA Candidates Exhibition 2026
DESCRIPTION:The RBSA Candidates Exhibition features the work of artists wishing to be elected to the Society\, either as Associates or\, for existing Associates\, full Members. The current Membership is able to view the exhibition and vote for the artists they would like to see successfully elected. The exhibition is also open to the public\, which provides an exciting opportunity for visitors to see the high standard of work by prospective RBSA Members and Associates. \nAll candidates are asked to submit six works as part of their application. Existing Members and Associates who visit the exhibition are able to vote for their choices in a secret ballot. To be successfully elected\, each candidate must receive 50% +1 of the total votes cast in favour of their candidature. \nLast year\, the Society welcomed 16 new Associates\, and four Associates progressed to become full Members. All new additions to the Membership help strengthen the Society and ensure that it is able to continue supporting artists and promoting the visual arts. SUMMARY:Alison Holt and Jaci Hogan - Textures and Rhythms
DESCRIPTION:Textures and Rhythms is a joint exhibition from Alison Holt and Jaci Hogan\, established artists who work in two distinctly different media; textiles and pastels. \nHaving exhibited together regularly for the past five years\, the artists have discovered a synergy between the stitches of Alison’s landscapes and the mark making of Jaci’s seascapes. Together they explore seasonal changes\, natural patterns\, and elemental textures found in nature. \nAlison studied at Goldsmiths and has developed a technique of free motion machine embroidery. This way of working enables Alison to paint landscapes with stitches in complex layers\, giving richness of colour and a subtly sculptural texture to her work. Alison explores the interplay of light and shadow\, bringing depth and atmosphere to her landscapes. \nJaci Hogan is a pastel artist whose work focuses on the sea and coastal landscapes. Having grown up in Australia\, Jaci uses her childhood memories to imbue her work with the feeling of serenity she feels when by the sea. SUMMARY:RBSA Portrait Prize 2026
DESCRIPTION:The RBSA Portrait Prize\, last held in 2024\, is a celebration of portraiture\, one of the oldest artistic genres in existence. \nThroughout history\, portraits have been employed as a way of immortalising a person or group\, and preserving their appearance for future generations. No other type of painting can give such insights into social and cultural history\, and portraits allow us the unique gift of being able to connect with individuals\, both living and dead. Indeed\, the importance and popularity of portraiture remain undiminished today. \nMore recently\, portraits have been used to express more abstract themes\, including the emotions or the state of the inner-self\, without necessarily focusing on physical likeness. DESCRIPTION:The RBSA Summer Show is the Society’s biggest open call of the year and attracts submissions from artists based all around the globe. Displayed over all three floors of the Gallery\, this exhibition does not limit artists to a theme or technique\, the result being a highly diverse show with a multitude of approaches represented. \nAs Birmingham’s equivalent to the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition\, this show provides an excellent opportunity for artists to showcase their work in the city’s foremost contemporary art gallery. This exhibition draws on what began as a church ritual and evolved into a cultural language – vibrant colours\, tailored suits\, and headwear reveal how style and self‑presentation shape identity. \nPathfinders: Sunday Best invites visitors to explore how Caribbean communities use dress\, colour\, and self‑presentation to express pride and belonging. Through portraits\, artefacts\, personal stories\, and participatory programming\, visitors are given insights into Sunday Best as a cultural language. SUMMARY:Largely Unseen: Works From The RBSA Permanent Collection
DESCRIPTION:The objective of RBSA heritage exhibitions is to give the public access to the Society’s Permanent Collection of artworks. Themes for these shows are chosen to facilitate the display of a broad selection of pieces\, aimed at giving visitors the opportunity to view as wide as possible a cross section of the works held. \nWith wall space at a premium\, limited space often means that RBSA heritage exhibitions cannot feature many of the larger works owned by the Society. Largely Unseen will rectify these omissions by focusing solely on the most substantial artworks held in the Permanent Collection. \nBoth of Norma Rhys-Davis’ monumental oil paintings\, 3 Cliffs – Gower III and Seascape\, will be shown side by side for the first time\, and John Ridout’s sunny gouache piece Little Greek Church will sit next to his bold acrylic Blue And Ochre Landscape. \nPreview Evening: Tuesday 4 August 6.00pm – 8.00pm\nExhibition closes: Saturday 29 August 5.00pm \nImage: Norma Rhys-Davis RBSA\, 3 Cliffs – Gower III\, 1988

SUMMARY:Jan Gay RBSA
DESCRIPTION:Rhythmic brush strokes\, vibrant tones\, and a richness of light are central to Jan Gay’s collection. What could be every day\, becomes inspirational as she explores the energy of shape\, colour\, and form. Excitement builds from the seemingly insignificant. \nWhether painting plein air or in her studio\, the initial thrill of starting the work creates vitality in her mark making\, before a period of reflection. Evoking the way transient moments\, a motherly embrace in a queue or light on the canal water\, become a tangible memory. \nJan’s lifelong love of painting has been influenced by many artists\, including Paul Cezanne\, Mary Cassatt and\, more recently\, Fred Cuming. \nIn 2008 Jan became an RBSA Member. SUMMARY:RBSA Postcard Sale
DESCRIPTION:As a charity\, the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists relies on the generosity of its visitors and supporters to help maintain the RBSA Gallery and continue its vital work. With no public funding from either the local authority or Arts Council\, this 200 year-old Society supports itself through annual membership fees\, artwork sales\, exhibition entry fees\, Gallery Shop sales\, donations from local grant giving bodies\, and donations from the public. \nIn order to generate funds\, the Society is offering the public a unique opportunity to purchase original artwork at great prices in a blind auction. The postcards on display have all been created by RBSA Members and Associates and are currently in an auction on the Givergy website. \nVisitors are invited to used the link below to visit the online auction site and bid on the piece/s they would like to take home. SUMMARY:Gabrielle Roberts-Dalton RBSA
DESCRIPTION:Recasting the Shadow  \n…female intuition & the Ancestral Knower \nWorking through ideas related to the female psyche\, Gabrielle Roberts-Dalton has explored menopause\, ageing\, persona\, Hagitude/Cronedom female stories\, and fairytales. In these works\, she reassesses the importance of physically touching nature\, down to the basic touch of grass and finding awe and enchantment in the life/death/life nature. Her paintings try to open a portal into another world of intuition and the imagination. Roberts-Dalton works in series of oil paintings and drawings that overlap and could easily branch out in numerous directions. She follows an instinctual and fluid path\, responding to the images\, mark making\, and colour. DESCRIPTION:Summer Botanicals in Watercolour with Jeni Neale. \nSpend a summer’s day exploring how to paint those rich\, velvety petals that make seasonal blooms so irresistible. With guidance from botanical artist Jeni Neale\, you’ll learn textural watercolour techniques\, gentle layering\, and colour mixing to capture the softness and depth of midsummer flowers. By the end of the day\, you’ll have a beautifully detailed study to take home. \nFresh summer flowers will be provided\, plus a piece of hot-pressed watercolour paper. SUMMARY:Next Generation RBSA 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Next Generation RBSA programme is triennial opportunity open to early-career visual artists based within easy reach of the RBSA Gallery in Birmingham. Through the programme\, the Society is offering a small number of artists the opportunity to enjoy the benefits a three-year free membership of the Society. \nIn contrast to the Society’s previous Graduate Artists programme\, this new scheme reflects the multitude of ways in which people begin their artistic journeys\, and the Society actively encouraged self-taught artists to apply for the programme\, alongside those who have completed arts-related courses at university. \nThe Next Generation RBSA Exhibition comprises work by applicants who\, following interviews\, were selected to show a collection of their artwork. From this group\, those chosen by the RBSA Council will be offered full Membership benefits\, including multiple exhibition opportunities at the RBSA Gallery each year\, a solo show space\, expert guidance and tutoring\, inclusion in Society activities\, and valuable invitations to networking events. SUMMARY:Guild of Aviation Artists - Defence Of The Realm
DESCRIPTION:The Guild of Aviation Artists was established in 1971\, and it is recognised throughout the world as the premier society for the promotion of aviation art. Its principal aim is to promote aviation art in all its forms\, and to encourage interest in the genre by artists and non-artists alike. \nAmongst the founder members of the Guild was the famous wildlife artist\, David Shepherd\, who was in fact an aviation artist before he became famous for his wildlife work. Other famous past members include the late artists Terence Cuneo\, Keith Shackleton\, Roy Cross\, and Roy Huxley (the latter two being most renowned for their Airfix and Matchbox cover art). \nThe Guild’s current membership stands at around 260 in the UK\, and the work of members\, both past and present\, is to be found in not only private collections around the world\, but in many corporate and governmental locations. In particular\, the majority of paintings to be found in the likes of the RAF Club and messes of airbases were most probably produced by Guild members. \nToday\, amongst the membership of the Guild\, are to be found ex-service personnel who have rekindled their association with military aviation through their artwork. \nThis new exhibition\, Defence Of The Realm\, will feature some 180 aviation paintings\, the majority of which will follow\, and portray\, the defence of the realm theme. \nThe opening day of the exhibition\, 15 September\, will be Battle of Britain day itself. A VIP opening ceremony (by Invitation only) will be held at the RBSA Gallery Monday 14 September\, when President of the Royal Air Forces Association\, Air Marshal Sir Baz North\, will be attending as guest VIP to open the show. \nThe Guild has agreed to donate part of the commission on any sales at the exhibition to the Royal Air Forces Association in recognition of those that have served –  and those who continue to do so. \nExhibition closes: Saturday 26 September 5.00pm \nImage: Robert Calow GAvA\, Defence Of The Realm (detail)

DESCRIPTION:The biennial RBSA Prize celebrates creativity and innovation by promoting work at the cutting edge of contemporary art. While this exhibition includes work by artists based locally\, nationally\, and internationally\, those with more contemporary practices were encouraged to submit work\, allowing the RBSA to shine a light on artwork that is pushing boundaries. \nAs one of the most exciting contemporary arts venues in Birmingham\, the RBSA Gallery provides exhibiting artists with an excellent platform to showcase their artwork to a large and diverse audience. \nAn enormous variety of techniques and approaches are represented in the works on display\, exploring a myriad of different themes and concepts. DESCRIPTION:Stories is the theme for the next Birmingham Art Circle Annual Exhibition. SUMMARY:RBSA Annual Exhibition 2026
DESCRIPTION:With the Society’s Annual Exhibition approaching its bicentenary\, 2026’s show offers the Membership\, including fourteen newly elected Associates\, the opportunity to show their work in the RBSA Gallery. Each new artist brings their unique artistic practice to the Society\, helping to further diversify the growing Membership. \nWith the exceptions of 1940\, 1941\, and 2020\, the RBSA’s flagship show\, its Annual Exhibition\, has featured the work of Society Members and Associates every year since its first incarnation in 1827. The Membership are encouraged to show their most recent work\, allowing visitors to see an update on their practice each winter. This exhibition also allows the Society to track it own evolution\, and with every new addition to the Membership comes further assurances of the RBSA’s survival for generations to come. \nWhile the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists has a long and illustrious history\, this year’s Annual Exhibition is a celebration of the almost 200 contemporary artists who make up the current Membership.
