DESCRIPTION:My Warwickshire \nCornwall-based landscape artist Andrew Barrowman ARBSA primarily works en plein air\, often exploring ‘off the beaten track’ in his daily sketching routine\, seeking out alternative views of familiar places. While his studio is based at Krowji in Redruth\, My Warwickshire represents an evocative return to the landscapes of his youth. \nThis exhibition brings together twenty oil paintings produced directly on location along the rivers Avon and Dene\, the Stratford canal\, and local country lanes. Working in oil en plein air\, Andrew embraces the challenge of the changing elements\, translating immediate atmospheric shifts into painterly brushwork and rich texture. Synthesising years of preparatory outdoor sketches with live observation\, these pieces capture fleeting moments in time. The collection stands as a testament to the technical challenges of working from life\, mapping the physical and nostalgic routes that connect the artist back to his roots. \nAndrew is a full member of The Pastel Society in London and an Associate member of the RBSA. SUMMARY:Roger Griffiths RBSA
DESCRIPTION:Roger Griffiths RBSA is a self-taught landscape artist using watercolours and mixed media with acrylic paints. He is a retired landscape architect with an interest in geology and the physical activities which shaped the landscape. Roger was elected an RBSA Member in 2011\, has exhibited in the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours at the Mall Galleries\, and\, in 2015\, appeared on Sky TV’s Landscape Artist of the Year\, painting at Trelissick in Cornwall. \nHis painting process starts with sketches on site which are then abstracted\, cropped\, and collaged. DESCRIPTION:The biennial RBSA Prize celebrates creativity and innovation by promoting work at the cutting edge of contemporary art. DESCRIPTION:Wire Wagtail Bird Sculptures Workshop with Sarah Dukes\nCreate a life-size wire wagtail sculpture and another bird of your choice. \nAge group and abilities to be taught         \n\n18 years and above\nSuitable for all abilities\n\nCourse aims and skills/knowledge to be taught \n\nCreating 3D sculptures from 2D source material\nObserving key features of a bird\, to retain identifiable characteristics of the bird\nDrawing these with wires\nBuilding up layers of wire to create a finished sculpture\nHandline\, cutting\, and shaping wire\nObservational drawing using wire\nCreating sculptural forms from chicken wire\, including how to attach and connect to create the base shape\, and how to eave the wire to build form\n\nCourse outline for the day\nTwo sculptures: handcraft a grey or pied wagtail in the morning\, and a bird of your choice in the afternoon. \nYour wagtail will be slightly bigger than life-size\, and your second bird can be any size you want: from a tiny wren to a regal raven. \nMorning \n\nCreate 2D bird ‘drawing’ to familiarise yourself with wire\nChicken wire and lengths of wire will be pre-cut for this stage\nCreate body from chicken wire\nAdd outline of head and body\, wings\, and legs\nBuild layers of wire to add colour and key characteristics of the bird\nFor each stage\, there will be verbal and written instructions\, plus a model example\n\nAfternoon \n\nUse the books and images to decide on your second bird\nChoose the materials needed; cut lengths of wire\nApply skills learned in the morning sessions to a new bird of your choosing (real or imagined)\n\nWhat you need to bring with you:\n\nThere is no need to bring anything as all materials are provided\, however if participants have some garden\, craft\, or other wire that they would like to use\, please bring it. Similarly\, if participants have preferred pliers\, bring them along.\nParticipants will be working with spiky wire so bring gloves if desired (e.g. thin gardening gloves\n\nWhat we will provide:\n\nChicken wire\nA variety if craft and garden wires of different thicknesses\nMaterials and colour\nPliers and snippers\nInstruction sheets that can be taken away\nBird images and books as source material\n\nMethods of assessing outcomes\n\nThe tutor will circulate around the group and provide individual feedback throughout the session\, creating several opportunities for self-reflection and peer feedback\nGroup discussion focusing on final sculptures at the end of the session\nCompletion of evaluation form\n\nBooking information\n\nTo book please use the ticketing system below. DESCRIPTION:Lino Reduction Printmaking Workshop with Jenny Mason-Gunning ARBSA\nLino reduction plate making and printing\, exploring multi-layer colour techniques using safe\, professional methods suitable for home or studio practice. \nLearners will develop the ability to carve multiple layers from a single lino block\, understand how to plan and sequence colours\, register each layer accurately\, ink and roll consistently\, and print both by hand and using a press. They will gain confidence in controlling colour\, detail\, and alignment across several print stages. \nAge group and abilities to be taught         \n\n18 years and above\nIdeal for beginners and experienced artists\n\nCourse aims and skills/knowledge to be taught \n\nGeometric folding\nConfidence with a scalpel\nPaper sculpture through cutting and folding paper\nHow to create your own designs\n\nCourse outline for the day\nMorning \n\nShort introduction and talk on reduction linocut\, tools\, inks\, papers\, and registration\nDemonstration of designing and carving the first layer of the lino block\nParticipants will begin carving their own lino block and preparing for the first colour layer\n\nAfternoon \n\nDemonstration of inking\, rolling\, registration pins/tabs\, and printing the first colour\nParticipants then print their first layer by hand and on the press\, then carve and print subsequent layers\nFinal prints completed\, with guidance on sequencing\, troubleshooting\, and how to continue working at home\n\nWhat you need to bring with you:\n\nA selection of drawing or photographs participants would like to develop into a reduction linocut\nAn apron\nMarigold or nitrile gloves\nA pack of baby wipes\nStudents may also bring their own registration pins if they already use a system at home\n\nWhat we will provide:\n\nLino blocks for reduction printing\nWater-washable and oil-based inks\nRollers\nPrinting paper\nNewsprint\nLino carving tools\nRegistration pins and tabs (available to use during the workshop; learners may purchase these if they wish to take them home)\nExamples of the tutor’s work\nNitrile gloves\nScrim and muslin\nCotton buds\nInk scrapers and palette knives\nPaper fingers\nA copy of the tutor’s book for reference (for sale in the Gallery Shop)\n\nAdditional notes \nA press will be available during the workshop\, but participants will also be shown hand-printing methods so they can continue working confidently at home. DESCRIPTION:Photographing and Presenting Your Work Using a Smartphone Workshop with Olivia Swinscoe ARBSA\nArtists working in all media and at all levels need to be able to document and present their work effectively\, using the tools at their disposal. The session will look at how the same artwork may need to be photographed differently depending on whether the image is being used for documentation\, promotion\, online display\, or submission. \nAge group and abilities to be taught         \n\n18 years and above\nSuitable for all abilities\n\nCourse aims and skills/knowledge to be taught \n\nParticipants will leave with at least one usable image of their artwork\nParticipants will learn how to light\, photograph\, edit\, save\, retrieve\, and export images of their artwork\n\nCourse outline for the day\nParticipants will learn how to produce photographs of their artwork suitable for a website\, social media\, submission form\, or their own archive\, using their mobile phones. \nThe workshop combines discussion\, demonstration\, guided practical exercises\, and independent experimentation. SUMMARY:RBSA Annual Exhibition 2026
DESCRIPTION:With the Society’s Annual Exhibition approaching its bicentenary\, 2026’s show offers the Membership\, including fourteen newly elected Associates\, the opportunity to show their work in the RBSA Gallery. Each new artist brings their unique artistic practice to the Society\, helping to further diversify the growing Membership. \nWith the exceptions of 1940\, 1941\, and 2020\, the RBSA’s flagship show\, its Annual Exhibition\, has featured the work of Society Members and Associates every year since its first incarnation in 1827. The Membership are encouraged to show their most recent work\, allowing visitors to see an update on their practice each winter. This exhibition also allows the Society to track it own evolution\, and with every new addition to the Membership comes further assurances of the RBSA’s survival for generations to come. \nWhile the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists has a long and illustrious history\, this year’s Annual Exhibition is a celebration of the almost 200 contemporary artists who make up the current Membership. With practices encompassing painting\, drawing\, printmaking\, photography\, sculpture\, glassware\, ceramics\, textiles\, videography\, and installation\, these artists act as custodians of the Society\, and work to promote the visual arts across the region and further afield. \nAt various times throughout the exhibition\, RBSA Members and Associates will be in the Gallery to talk to visitors and answer questions. \nPreview Evening: Thursday 19 November 6.00pm – 8.00pm\nExhibition closes: Saturday 2 January 2027 5.00pm \nImage: Linda Barlow RBSA\, Morro Jable to the Airport July \n
