Gabrielle completed an Art Foundation and BA Hons Degree in Fine Art in 1985, specialising in Ceramic Sculpture & Wax Painting. Through the late 1980’s and the 1990’s she worked as a freelance artist, working full time on large commissions for commercial companies and exhibiting throughout the UK. For several years Gabrielle has been focussing on oil painting & developing a narrative through portraiture. Some of these pieces however, have evolved into works where a ‘portrait’ is less obviously defined, for instance where she herself and family are the models. She enjoys experimenting with technique, materials and the perspective of images, finding something new and conveying a different world that may not be obvious to the viewer, such as the possibility of alternative realities outside our own, where art becomes a looking glass to this. Gabrielle likes to explore the mark making and texture of paint, folding the space on the picture plain into an image that is definitely a painting and not photographic. She believes that artists are vulnerable to the world, so storytelling, novels and events in her life have been significant triggers for paintings - the consequences of reading a particular book could easily be a major change in the course of her work. Gabrielle has exhibited on many occasions at the Herbert Art Gallery, Coventry, winning the visitor’s vote in the 2014 Open Exhibition. She is an ongoing exhibitor at The RBSA Gallery, including The Portrait Prize and has contributed to the Leicestershire Schools Exhibition at Beaumanor Hall. She was a finalist in the Artist & Illustrators ‘Artist of the Year 2014’ exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London. She has a piece in a permanent art installation at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-Upon-Avon. She was elected an associate member to the RBSA in 2016 and will take portrait commission work, subject to availability.
